What printhead failure looks like on a ColourStar AQ

  • A white stripe down every box or bag in the run — the dead-sector signature of a fixed page-wide head.
  • Nozzle dropout that starts after a job on cotton totes — textile lint settling on the nozzle plate and bridging nozzles.
  • Fresh scoring on the nozzle plate after a run on tall or lifting packaging — the head was set too low and made contact with the substrate.
  • A colour missing after the machine has stood between short runs — dried ink in a shop that prints on demand rather than continuously.
  • Density falling off across the width on long kraft or corrugated runs — paper dust loading the wiper and capping station.

Photograph the nozzle test print before running any more recovery cycles. Repeated aggressive purging on a head that has already dried out can turn a recoverable fault into a replacement.

How we approach a ColourStar AQ printhead

The ColourStar is bought for short-run, on-demand work, so the machine stands still more than it runs. That shifts the failure profile: dried ink and cap-down discipline matter more here than wear, and a large share of “dead head” calls on this class of machine turn out to be recoverable blockage.

Head clearance is adjustable because the machine prints on three-dimensional packaging. That same flexibility is the main source of physical head damage we see — a strike on a tall or lifting pack scores the nozzle plate, and scoring is the one failure mode that nothing recovers. If the fault appeared right after a job on a new pack format, say so when you send the nozzle test.

Cotton tote printing puts textile lint into the head area, and lint behaves differently from paper dust — it bridges nozzles rather than abrading the plate. On a machine that runs cotton, service covers the capping and wiping station, not just a flush.

Trimatt publishes the HP FI-1000 engine for the ColourStar AQ V and AQ LT. It has not published the engine for the ultrawide BoxPro, so we identify the head from the machine before quoting rather than assuming the family carries across.

Does the Trimatt ColourStar use an HP printhead?

Yes. HP itself lists Trimatt Systems among the machine builders using the FI-1000 print engine, and Trimatt states the HP Fi1000 engine for the ColourStar AQ V and the entry-level AQ LT — the same 297 mm fixed page-wide head used by other single-pass packaging presses. FI-1000 repair procedures, replacement heads and pigment ink apply to them directly.

Is the ColourStar BoxPro the same printhead?

Trimatt has not published the engine for the ultrawide BoxPro, and its quoted print width is far wider than a single FI-1000 swath, so we do not assume it is the same. Send a photo of the head assembly or the part number and we confirm what is inside before quoting.

We print cotton tote bags and keep losing nozzles. Is the head failing?

Usually not. Textile lint settles on the nozzle plate and bridges nozzles, and it comes straight back if only the head is flushed. On a machine running cotton, the capping and wiping station is part of the job.

We are in Australia — can InkBags still help?
